Buckler's Barrier Law - It's Coming True
In April 2009 I published the following blog article http://elchav.blogspot.com/
The article was titled Buckler's Barrier Law and after only a few short years there is already evidence that his theories are coming true;
First read the article itself. It states;
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Moore's Law states "that the number of transistors on a chip will double about every two years"
Gilder’s Law states "the total bandwidth of communication systems triples every 12 months"
Metcalfe’s Law states "as a network grows, the value of being connected to it grows exponentially, while the cost per user remains the same or even reduces"
Technology is getting cheaper, smaller and faster by an increasing pace. So if technology gets so cheap it becomes free, and so small it can't be seen and so ridiculously fast it becomes instant, then surely the Laws above are flawed. Perhaps not ?
Technology is already FREE; in fact companies give away hardware for free and make back the costs via subscription. This is an increasing trend. So for Metcalfe’s Law to remain, you will actually need to get paid cash as an incentive to adopt technologies? Companies will make back costs with advertising revenues and subscription.
Technology is already FAST; in fact how do you beat technology that delivers responses instant? I know that Intel have already created Photonics, which is a way of harnessing light for processing instead of current.
Well the answer is predictive technology using AI. Systems learning your lifestyle may mean that when you go to reach for the remote your TV will prompt you to switch to the exact video stream or source you were thinking about switching to as easy as T9 on a mobile helps you text. Speed will then become about how fast a system accurately predicts your thoughts rather than responding to your instructions. Scary stuff.
Technology is already SMALL; in fact, how do you beat mobiles that you can inject into your ear, or plasma screens that are only 6.5mm. Well the answer is surface technology using Nanotechnology. By playing around with natures mechanics you are able to develop hardware at molecular levels. In Microsoft Future Vision Video 2019 you can see surfaces become our new interface(i.e - tables & walls). Going a step further, you may see a nanotechnology deployed into materials giving it other new properties and benefits. So wood can be modified with nanotechnology to act as a touch screen display when pressure is applied.
So might we pass through a barrier with the above technology laws which take us into a new world of possibilities?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I aim to develop technologies that bring to market tools that equip us ready to pass through this barrier. A lot of readers won't get their head around this concept.
So where is the evidence that technology is becoming more than free, perhaps revenue opportunities ?
Where is the evidence that technology is becoming more than small and invisible ?
Where is the evidence that technology is becoming more than fast and instantaneous, but predictable ?
Well after some looking about online the 3 pieces of evidence needed to prove this technology law have been found.
Paid Incentives For Using Technology;
- This website is a virtual dog walk service that credits a charity up to £1 each time you walk your virtual dog ; http://uk.pedigree.com/pedigreeadoptiondrive/
- There are apps that pay you for using them but the first silicon valley service to launch this didn't find that this market was quiet ready http://apperang.com. Perhaps consumers aren't ready to believe you can get money for using technology.
- Finally solar panels are making it possible to make money from the adoption of technology. This is a long term scheme but a realistic payback is perfectly possible. http://www.moneymagpie.com/article/make-money-from-solar-panels
Technology That's Beyond Microscopic
- The author reports " it may not seem far-fetched for much longer" and thanks to nanotechnology breakthroughs we are seeing a motor that has now been built 100,000 times smaller than the width of a strand of human hair http://www.thehalsreport.com/2011/01/another-breakthrough-in-the-field-of-nanotechnology/
Predictability Within Technology
- Google Search Instant will display websites before you've finished typing them into the search. http://www.google.com/instant/
So there we have it, today we are looking at the 3 main technology laws entering into a new era of incentives, invisibility and intelligence from what used to always just be referred to as cheap, small and fast technologies.
